Eric Owens Harper, "Red," Manager of Doranor
Music, A Division of Pure Soul Music Inc, spent his youth
between Texas and North Carolina where Roberta Flake was
once the music teacher at the then H. B. Sugg High School. He recorded
background vocals in New York for Rudy Gaye. Rudy, also from
the same hometown, was the lead vocalist of Ace Spectrum,
a hot 70's R&B recording group from Brooklyn. "We
started young learning to play guitars and drums, etc., in the early
days. If you could not play or sing, you just watched. We worked
hard to mold our talents. Everybody wanted to be a professional
musician." When we started Pure Soul Music Inc.,
we wanted to be different from many of the troubled camps at the
time of gangs and violence in the business. R&B would be our
strength mostly because of the gospel background of the corporation.
We started with Raye Edwards, Tony Williams, and former
partner Dorian Daniels. Being fortunate to sign to Daryl Simmons
gave us the opportunity to learn and work with the best. Daryl is
a no-nonsense producer who has made a career in the music business.
We couldn't have been blessed more. In this business, exposure is
important. The biggest gift you can have in this business is recognizing
special talent. I have worked with Doranor Music because
of the talented gifts in the corporation. It's not often that you
find a team that can work with anybody. Whether demos or cutting,
we are structurally sound in the industry. As I meet many of the
famous artists around the country shopping demos, my most cherish
experience is the meetings and dress rehearsal with the Godfather
of Soul, Mr. James Brown himself. "You tend to forget what
this music business is all about until you meet and talk with the
man who helped start it all." He played all instruments and
performed at an unbelievable level. Raye and Tony are so focused
on perfection; it has to be right. Learning song structure and foundations
is an ongoing process. More often, our products speak for themselves.
We have a rule: "Let the music do the talking for us."
Doranor Music is the kind of Basement Company that lays many
of the foundations for successful music. Whether it is remakes or
new concepts, we can be creative. We love working with up and coming
young talent as well. From Rap to Hip-Hop our doors are open to
those who have invested time in developing their skills. We receive
many demos from artists, and producers. So we try to review them
all, for we know a star is born everyday.
